Patristics or patrology examines the earliest works of the Christian writers/theologians, known as the Church Fathers. The name derived from the latin and greek words for father: Latin pater and Greek πατὴρ. The Patristic Age is generally considered to run from the end of the Apostolic Age (c. 100 CE) to either 451, the date of the Council of Chalcedon, or ending in the 8th century with the Second Council of Nicaea.
